I confess that I have not read Maya Angelou’s memoir, Why the Caged Bird Sings. I also confess I may not. I don’t handle children being mistreated very well. I also tend to hold stories in my heart and head long after I have finished, so I am protective over my own mind. What I do know about Maya, is that she was mistreated as a child. She was abused, she was raped and it forced her into a destructive lifestyle for a long time. I also know she overcame and became a world famous author. She rose up from the ashes and that is admirable in any one.
Maya eventually became an American memoir, poet, and civil rights activist. She published seven autobiographies, three books of essays, several books of poetry, and is credited with a list of plays, movies, and television shows spanning over 50 years. She received dozens of awards and more than 50 honorary degrees.
Maya’s life inspires me and it truly should inspire us all. No matter our background, no matter our lot in life we can rise up. There is no greater country in the world to live in for opportunity to make something of our lives and to turn from ashes to beauty. Maya has an impressive list of friends, influence and she was a disciplined writer and activist for those things which she stood for and believed in, which were good and worthy efforts. She also had a strong faith in a Mighty God who gives hope where sometimes there is none and strength to the weary and weak. Something she took advantage of and lived.
